Snapshot

Heroes for Change is a volunteer program that gives college students a platform to make a difference in their communities. The program director approached us and challenged us to create a program that would meet their objectives.

Our Assisgnment - Bonding and Inspiring to Action

The client asked us to create an experience for 20-something college students that appealed to their use of technology, their desire to make the world a better place and love for all things bonding. Because the participants were young, the client wanted us to ensure that we created a fun and engaging environment – something they would not only enjoy in the moment but also remember fondly.

The Approach

With a clear brief, we set out to exceed out client’s expectations and focused the program on three parts:

  • Fun and Bonding – because we were having people coming from different parts of Nairobi, and Kenya it was a great time to meet, bond, exchange contacts and get to know one another and have fun while at it.
  • Inspiring to Action – Heroes for Change (H4C) at the time had an audacious goal of reaching 18 Million Kenyans by 2020, we were going to create a program that would inspire the participants (called Heroes) to reach that goal
  • The Making of a Hero – we were going to use GoTeam to discuss the values will be needed to meet your team’s audacious goals. And also have challenges around what makes a hero – the charater traits of a hero.

Event Day

The event was held at Windsor Golf and Country Club. We started the morning with registration handing out of badges and lanyards, tea, and a brief moment of fame infront of a photobooth we had set up. The next part of the program was indoors where we had a series of several ice breakers and zumba to get the participant’s blood rushing.

Our first activity was The Making of a Hero. We picked different African and African American heroes the participants could relate to and printed flags with their images that each team used as their team flag. Because our heroes are young, passionate change makers and modern day warriors, we created an adrenaline rushing custom made team building activity we have them do compete in various challenges so as to access various materials that would then form their massai warrior gear that one team member would wear. Followed by one large collaborative and competitive activity.

This activity was designed to help them lock into the spirit of the warrior – longevity and not giving up, saving/ helping those in need and being an agent of change. And also creative problem solving, through the creation of various materials that they created.

Because of it’s size, Windsor is a great venue to walk around and explore so it only made sense for us to pick Go Team as the afternoon activity. Go Team, is an Amazing Race styled team building run on an iPad where teams complete various challeges around the property using preset GPS points. Go Team is also the only app based and exploration team building product in East Africa.

We packed the application with several lesson points:

  • MDG Goals and the Heroes responsibilities in hitting those goals
  • Get to know one another challenges
  • Videos Challenges and Text Guides on understanding purpose
  • Fun Video, Photo, Quiz challenges

It was trully a collaboration of fearless people admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities, commited to changing Kenya and Africa!
